Wet Mess Tavern Renovation – Rolleston Coal Mine, Central Queensland

PROJECT BRIEF

Structural engineering for renovations to the wet mess (tavern) building at the Rolleston Coal Mine accommodation village in Queensland’s Bowen Basin. Scope included structural assessment and design for the building alterations. GDS Job No. 7666.

Structural Engineering for a Remote Mine Site

GDS Consulting Engineers is regularly engaged for commercial and industrial projects well beyond the Brisbane metro area, including remote sites across regional Queensland. One recent project we were pleased to support was renovation works to the wet mess, or tavern building, at the Rolleston Coal Mine accommodation village. Rolleston is an open-cut thermal coal operation located on the western edge of Queensland’s Bowen Basin, around 16 kilometres west of the Rolleston township and roughly 140 kilometres south-east of Emerald. The accommodation village provides housing and amenities for the site’s large workforce, and the wet mess is a central social facility for staff living on site.

Renovating a Working Camp Facility

Renovation works to an occupied, operational facility in a remote location require a considered structural approach. GDS provided the structural engineering assessment and design for the alterations, ensuring the building modifications met the required structural standards while suiting the practical realities of a busy mine camp. Designing for a remote site also means allowing for buildability, material availability and the logistics of delivering works a long way from major centres.

Our Role as Structural Engineers

Our scope involved reviewing the proposed renovation, assessing the existing structure, designing the structural elements associated with the alterations and issuing certified structural documentation. We worked closely with the project team to confirm details and provide engineering advice throughout, so the renovation could be delivered safely and efficiently. GDS provides RPEQ-certified structural engineering and Form 15 certification for commercial and industrial projects of this kind.

Commercial and Industrial Structural Engineering Across Queensland

Projects like the Rolleston wet mess renovation demonstrate GDS’s capability to service industrial, mining and commercial clients across Queensland, not just in the south-east. Whether it is a mine site facility, an industrial building or a commercial fit-out, early structural involvement helps keep works practical, compliant and cost-effective. If you have a commercial, industrial or mine-site building project anywhere in Queensland, GDS can assist with structural assessment, design and certification.
