GDS Consulting Engineers regularly works with schools and educational facilities across South East Queensland on upgrades and alterations. One recent project we were pleased to support was a stage framing alteration at Moreton Bay College, involving a truss stage frame for the school’s performance space. Performance and assembly spaces are an important part of school life, and getting the overhead framing right is essential where equipment, lighting or rigging may be suspended above a stage used by students and staff.
Engineering the Truss Stage Frame
A stage frame or overhead truss structure has to safely carry its own weight along with any loads hung from it, all while integrating with the existing building. GDS provided the structural engineering design for the truss stage framing, sizing the steel members and connections and detailing how the new frame ties into the existing structure. Structures over occupied spaces demand careful attention to loads, connections and safety, which is exactly the kind of detail our team focuses on.
Our Role as Structural Engineers
Our scope included reviewing the proposed alteration, assessing the existing structure, designing the truss stage frame and its supports, and issuing certified structural documentation for the works. We coordinated with the school and project team throughout, providing engineering advice to keep the alteration safe and practical. GDS provides RPEQ-certified structural design and Form 15 certification for school and commercial projects.
