An Awning in the Heart of the Brisbane CBD

Queen Street is one of Brisbane’s most recognisable addresses, and a street-front awning provides valuable weather protection and shade for pedestrians while enhancing the building’s frontage.
Engineering an Awning to an Existing Facade
Fixing a new awning to an existing building, particularly an older or heritage facade in a busy city setting, requires careful structural design. The awning structure and its connections have to carry wind and gravity loads and transfer them safely back into the existing building. GDS designed the awning structure and the fixings back to the facade, assessing the existing structure to confirm it could support the new loads. Working in a tight CBD location also means designing with buildability and public safety front of mind.
Our Role as Structural Engineers
Our involvement included reviewing the proposed awning design, assessing the existing building, designing the awning structure and connections, and issuing certified structural documentation. We coordinated with the client and project team throughout, providing engineering advice to keep the project practical and compliant. GDS provides RPEQ-certified structural design and Form 15 certification for commercial and CBD building works.
